What are Cobalt Chrome Dentures?
A cobalt chrome denture is a removable device designed to replace missing teeth. Some people refer to cobalt chrome dentures as just chrome dentures or cast metal dentures. They are all the same thing. A chrome denture is constructed on a cobalt chrome metal alloy framework to which acrylic teeth and gums are attached. It is held in place with clasps that clip on to natural teeth to hold it in place. The clasps are cast as an integral part of the metal framework giving greater strength and durability. The properties of cobalt chrome framework and clasps afford a perfect balance between, stiffness and flexibility further adding to the denture’s durability. Chrome dentures are also referred to as cobalt chrome dentures because of their metal alloy make-up.

What do cobalt chrome dentures look like?
Cobalt chrome dentures are less conspicuous when you speak or smile. Important parts of the metal framework are covered in gum coloured acrylic. Due to the lightness and strength of the metal denture, more of the palate is left uncovered. Thin metal clasps clip unobtrusively to natural teeth giving greater retention. Our friendly team is happy to show you a cobalt chrome denture, so you can see for yourself its superior qualities.
Cobalt Chrome Partial Dentures
Designed to replace missing teeth in either the upper or lower jaw, the partial chrome denture also improves mastication ability and serves as a placeholder preventing remaining teeth from shifting sideways which could make future replacement more difficult.
Another important reason for wearing partials is to support an opposing full denture. With few teeth on the front lower jaw, for example, biting unevenly on the denture will cause tilting and instability.
How does the cobalt chrome denture compare?
Cobalt Chrome Dentures versus Acrylic Dentures
The cobalt chrome partial denture is constructed on a metal alloy framework of which the clasps are an integral part. The metal is amazingly thin compared to the bulkier acrylic denture. It is also much stronger than the acrylic denture base making it more aesthetically pleasing and comfortable to wear. The cobalt chrome denture is more fracture-resistant than the acrylic denture base.
Metal clasps anchor the denture to natural teeth enhancing the denture’s security in the mouth and making the chrome denture more comfortable compared to acrylic dentures. Because they are an integral part of cobalt chrome denture, the clasps rarely break or bend. Whereas clasps on an acrylic denture are placed into the acrylic and may either bend or break off at the acrylic base, or a section of the acrylic breaks off with the clasp still inside.
The chrome denture’s minimalist design exposes greater palate area maximising the transfer of heat, cold and texture, thereby increasing food enjoyment. This feature also makes oral hygiene easier than with acrylic dentures.
|Cobalt Chrome Dentures||Acrylic Dentures|
|Very thin and lightweight||Thicker and bulkier in the mouth|
|Less conspicuous and more aesthetically |
|Stronger||More likely to break if dropped|
|More palate exposed||Covers more palate|
|Clasps are integral part of metal framework |
|Clasps are embedded in acrylic and can break off|
|Better retention in the mouth|
|Fracture resistant||Not as strong – will fracture if dropped|
|More difficult to repair||Can be repaired|
How long will a chrome denture last?
As a general measure, cobalt chrome dentures last between 5 -10 years, but this can vary depending on the patient. Over time, mouth and bone tissue shrink affecting the denture’s fit. While cobalt chrome dentures are more fracture resistant than acrylic dentures, repairs or alterations made are less reliable. In this case, a new denture may have to be made.
Can you use a denture cleaner on metal dentures?
Cobalt chrome dentures are corrosion resistant and non-porous, meaning they build up less plaque. Some cleaning agents are harmful to chrome dentures. Bleaching agents, for example, can be detrimental to the appearance and structure of your dentures. Ask your prosthetist for advice on denture cleaners. Generally brushing your chrome denture under warm water with a soft brush, then rinsing, is enough to keep your denture clean. As with all dentures and even natural teeth, staining may occur over time. In this case, your prosthetist, Dr Paul, can give your dentures a professional clean, restoring them to their sparkling best.
Why should I buy Australian?
To compete in the market, some dentists send their work to overseas manufacturers. The risks involved with this approach include the lack of regulatory oversight of products and devices you are going to wear in your mouth. Inferior manufacture and materials may result in poor fitting and cheap-looking dentures, and may not last as long as good quality dentures. Inexpensive materials used in the manufacture of overseas dentures may wear quicker, stain, chip or fracture. When this happens, you may find they are not repairable.
Even more concerning, the materials used aren’t safety guaranteed. Australian standards ensure the quality and safety of products made and used in Australia. But there is no obligation for dentists to reveal where a patient’s dentures were made. The onus is on you, the patient, to ask where your dentures will be manufactured. After all, you’ll want to be sure of the safety of a device you will wear in your mouth every day. When you choose Northern Rivers Denture Clinic for your cobalt chrome dentures, you can be assured they are manufactured by a specialist laboratory in Brisbane under strict Australian standards.
There are distinct benefits of dealing with a trusted local. We stand by all our products. If something is not right, we will fix it. Your satisfaction is guaranteed.
