Northern Rivers Denture Clinic is a family‑run denture clinic centrally located at 48A Wharf Street, Tweed Heads, just a block south of Tweed Mall Shopping Centre. For more than 50 years, patients have been cared for in this same building, first by clinic founder Frank Eckerick (from 1972) and, since 2010, by Paul and Simone Hargrave and their growing team.

Our modern clinic, with an on‑site laboratory, offers ample on‑street parking and easy access for wheelchairs and mobility scooters, and we provide a comprehensive range of denture services to keep your dentures in optimal condition.

Paul - Dental Prosthetist and Co-Owner

Paul - Dental Prosthetist

Paul has been attending to patients' denture needs in the Tweed region since 1979. Starting his career as a dental technician at age 15, he qualified at age 22 and has continued to upgrade his qualifications over the ensuing years. He was among the first graduates to successfully complete the newly inaugurated post-graduate Dental Prosthetics course, qualifying to become a dental prosthetist in 2006. Paul's long experience in dental prosthetics and his empathic and easy approach make him a favourite with our patients.

Paul divides his downtime between his family and his passion for surfing and fishing.

When she's not at the clinic, Amelia enjoys expressing her creativity through sewing and arts and crafts, reading, and spending time outdoors camping and at the beach, as well as quality time with friends and family.

What is a dental prosthetist?

A dental prosthetist is a registered health professional who specialises in the design, construction, and fitting of dentures, mouthguards, and other dental prosthetics. Unlike dental technicians who work in laboratories, dental prosthetists can consult with patients directly - no dentist referral needed.

To become a dental prosthetist, practitioners complete a Bachelor of Dental Technology followed by a Bachelor of Dental Prosthetics, plus supervised clinical practice. This specialised training means dental prosthetists have comprehensive knowledge of advanced techniques, modern materials, and the latest innovations in denture care.

At Northern Rivers Denture Clinic, Paul and Amelia are both qualified dental prosthetists who can assess your needs, take impressions, design your dentures, and ensure the perfect fit - all under one roof.

What do dental technicians do?

Dental technicians are the skilled craftspeople behind the scenes, working in dental laboratories to construct and repair dentures and other dental appliances. They create complete and partial dentures, crowns and bridges, mouthguards, orthodontic appliances, pre and post-surgical oral and maxillofacial devices.

At Northern Rivers Denture Clinic, our onsite laboratory means your dentures are crafted right here, ensuring quality control and faster turnaround times. Dental technicians work closely with dental prosthetists and dentists to bring treatment plans to life.

What role do dentists play?

Dentists (also called dental surgeons) focus on the overall health of your teeth and gums, including prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of dental diseases. While dentists can provide some denture services, many refer patients to dental prosthetists who specialise specifically in denture design and fitting.

The good news? You don't need a dentist referral to see a dental prosthetist at Northern Rivers Denture Clinic. However, if Paul or Amelia identify any underlying dental health issues during your consultation, they may recommend you see a dentist first to address those concerns before proceeding with denture treatment.

This collaborative approach ensures you receive the right care from the right professional.
